Maurine P. Benedict

NEWBERRY, MI – Maurine P. Benedict, 93, a longtime Newberry resident, died on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at Golden Leaves Living Center in Newberry.

Born on December 11, 19214 in Gaylord, she was a daughter of the late Lee & Dora (Burns) Craycraft. She graduated from Hubert High School in the class of 1942. She married John Payton on June 12, 1942 and he preceded her in death on October 26, 1951. She later married Fred (Sandy) Benedict on December 24, 1956 and he preceded her in death on January 25, 2002. Maurine owned and operated the Dairy Bar Restaurant in McMillan for many years and was a waitress at the Falls Hotel. She then was employed at the Newberry Regional Mental Health Center and was an attendant nurse until her retirement in 1988, with over 23 years of service. Maurine enjoyed travelling, crafts, and playing cards with friends, and volunteering at the Tahquamenon Area Senior Center Thrift Store. She was also active in past years with the Eastern Stars and enjoyed going to parades where her husband Sandy was a Shriners Clown.

Survivors include sons Murv (Beverly) Payton of Newberry, Roger (Kim) Payton of Crawfordville, FL, grandchildren Greg (Amy) Payton of Buffalo, Wy, Jeff Payton of Westland, Carrie Dewyer of Marquette, Jonathon (Alisha) Payton of Belleview, FL, Kyle and Cole Randolph of Crawfordville, FL. Great Grandchildren Justin Payton, Florida; Heather Taylor, Minnesota; Ethan Dewyer, N. Carolina; Danielle Dewyer, Michigan; Holly Spence, Minnesota; and Holden, Nova, and Reegan Payton, of Florida; 6 great-great grandchildren and brothers John Craycraft and Robert (Eunice) Craycraft of Oregon.

Besides her parents and husbands she is preceded in death by her sisters Doris, Beulah, Betty, June and Donna.

According to her wishes, cremation services have already been accorded. A graveside inurnment will occur in the Hulbert Township Cemetery at a later date.

The family suggests that if memorials are considered, they be directed to the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children.
