Gary Robert Dionne

Born on January 29, 1954 in Marquette, Gary was the eldest son of Les and Nancy Dionne. He grew up in Shiras Hills and was a proud graduate of Marquette High School in 1972. In 1973, he began a long career as an electrician, completing a 4 year apprenticeship with the IBEW in 1977. Gary was a proud alumnus of Northern Michigan University and graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Electronics in 1996.

His career as a journeyman electrician, foreman and master electrician spanned several decades and included work across the country through Local 1070, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers of Marquette. In 1986, Gary began work at Marquette General Hospital as a maintenance electrician and retired from MGH in 2010.

Gary married Linda Green Dionne on October 11, 1986 and together they shared 31 years of love, commitment, travels and adventures. Their love of family, friends and community was ever present in their lives. Gary’s infectious smile, his sense of humor and willingness to always help others was evident to everyone he met. Affectionately known as ‘big guy,’ he will be missed by many but never be forgotten.

Gary entered the ‘iron game’ when traveling as an electrician and after returning to Marquette, was a founding member of Joe’s Gym. He competed in body building competitions and brought home various awards, ribbons and trophies.

During his daily workout, he was quick to help others but always with the caveat ‘gentlemen, we are here to workout!” He and Linda are lifelong accomplished skiers and members of the ‘Backdoor’ at Marquette Mountain.

Gary’s interest in cars started at an early age but his true love affair began with his first Corvette. A founding member and active participant in the Lake Superior Corvette Club, Gary was first to suggest a road trip. It mattered not the distance or the destination as long as he was driving his Corvette. Sports were always a very special part of his life. He played softball and volleyball and enthusiastically followed all local teams. Gary was active in the NMU Wildcat Club and had a special love of NMU hockey. Gary and Linda are members of the NMU 1899 Society and attended numerous events on the NMU campus.

Gary is survived by his wife, Linda; his sister, Dawn Dionne Kelsey of Marquette and three nieces and one nephew. He had a special bond with Linda’s family and together they shared many holidays and special occasions. Gary’s friendships were many and they banded together to become the “Village of Angels” that provided the love, encouragement, support and caring that helped both Gary and Linda through the past ten months of his final journey.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother Peter.

Gary had an indomitable spirit and joy of life and living which was infectious to all. Please join Linda, his family and friends at a Memorial Service on Friday, January 12th at Canale-Tonella Funeral Home in Marquette with Deacon Gregg St. John officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends beginning at 3 p.m. until time of the service at 6 p.m. If you are unable to attend, please honor Gary with a smile to a friend, a black diamond ski run, a cruise down your favorite road or a drink with a friend.
