Frank O. Paull, Jr.

MARQUETTE, MI – Frank O. Paull, Jr., age 98, of Marquette, entered eternal life Monday morning, January 8, 2018, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans, in the loving, comforting care of his family.

Born April 27, 1919, in Marquette, a son of Dr. Frank O. and Lena (Dyruff) Paull, Sr., Frank was raised in Marquette and graduated from the John D. Pierce School. He enrolled at Northern State Teachers College (now Northern Michigan University) and, after receiving his degree, began his working career as a teacher in Monroe, Michigan. He later served as a Personnel Management Specialist with the Ford Motor Company in Detroit. During World War II, Frank served in the US Navy’s Pacific Theater of Operations and, following his honorable discharge, was employed as a personnel specialist with the Veterans Administration in San Francisco, California and Columbus, Ohio.

The balance of Frank’s long and varied career in personnel management was with the Department of the Army in Pueblo, Colorado, the Veterans Administration in Madison, Wisconsin and Detroit, Michigan, the Department of the Navy in Waukegan, Illinois, the Department of the Army in Wilmington, Illinois, and completing his career locally as a Civilian Personnel Officer for the Air Force at K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base.

During his early retirement, he accepted an appointment as Director of the Marquette County Historical Society and served in that capacity for six years.

Frank is survived by his wife, Hazel (Lindholm) Samppala Paull, whom he married in 1981; step-sons, Carl and Ed (Laurie) Samppala; and a step-daughter, Kay (Tim) Bedenis; and his step-grandchildren, Christine Bedenis, Katherine Bedenis, Emily Samppala, Spencer Samppala and Elliot Samppala.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Frank O. Paull, Sr; his first wife, Marjorie McLean Paull; his son, David Paull; two brothers, Stephen and William Paull; and a sister, Joan Erikson.
