Richard ‘Dick’ K. Chaltry

MUNISING, MI – Richard “Dick” K. Chaltry, age 88, of Munising, died on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising.

He was born on December 6, 1928 in Menominee, Michigan to Alphonse and Doris (Racine) Chaltry. Dick went to elementary school in both Marinette, WI and Menominee, MI. The family moved to Munising halfway through his freshman year in 1942 and Dick graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School. In October of 1946 he began employment at the Munising Paper Company and retired from Kimberly Clark after thirty-nine years of service in December of 1985. Dick had married Margaret Ann Hinz on June 12, 1948 and together they raised their six children. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church and was a volunteer art teacher for the fifth through eighth grades at Sacred Heart School. Dick served as State Chief Ranger, Upper Michigan, for the Catholic Order of Foresters for over fifty years. He had served on the Sacred Heart School Board for ten years and then the Munising Public School Board from 1972 until 1986. Dick and Margaret were active community members and volunteers. They served as president and secretary in the Senior Citizens Club for ten years and he served as tour leader for senior citizens motor coach trips. Dick was currently serving on the Upper Peninsula Community Credit Union Board since 1998. He worked as a leader of the Scoutcraft area for nine years, a Cub Scout leader for three years, Scoutmaster for seventeen years, and was still a registered Scouter working with Eagle Scouts. He was a volunteer driver for the Department of Human Services, putting over 34,000 miles on his car assisting people with their medical needs and doctors appointments. On October 14, 2006, he was honored with a special dinner and presented with the American Legion Citizenship medal and the Hub Perrault Citizen of the Year award. He was grateful to God for helping him help others and be a part of so many people’s lives. Dick and Margaret enjoyed traveling and took two trips to Korea to visit their son, Ric while he was serving in the U.S. Air Force. They also traveled to Hawaii and Alaska

He is survived by his loving wife of over sixty-eight years – Margaret Chaltry of Munising; their six children – Kenneth (Francis) Chaltry of Christmas, Michigan, William (Jodi) Chaltry of Las Vegas, New Mexico, Richard (Elaine) Chaltry of Beaver Creek, Ohio, Ann (Randy) Peterson of Manistique, Michigan, Gerard (Kim) Chaltry of Port Huron, Michigan, and Julie (Gary) Fisher of Howell, Michigan; fifteen grandchildren – Amanda, Rachel, Andrew, Sarah, Jennifer, Alex, Cory, Kelsey, Ryan, DJ, Bradley, Rebecca, Elliot, Lindsay, and Austin; six great-grandchildren -Zane, Darin, Chatham, Sydney, Zachary, and Allie; sister – Anita Gamma; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents Alphonse and Doris Chaltry, brother John “Dale” Chaltry; and granddaughter Sydney.

Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. a parish prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Father Chris Gardiner will celebrate Dick’s memorial mass on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Munising. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.
