ESCANABA — The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has several construction projects slated for the upcoming summer months. MDOT is responsible for the maintenance of all US-, M-, and I- routes within the Upper Peninsula.

In Delta County, MDOT has work scheduled to begin on Monday to resurface the roadway and replace a culvert on north/southbound M-183 from U.S. 2 to Garden Township. This $2.7 million investment by MDOT includes 2.1 miles of asphalt resurfacing, guardrail replacement, and pavement markings from the M-183 and US-2 intersection south to the culvert location.

Motorists in the area can expect one alternating lane to be open at the culvert during work periods with a temporary traffic signal. Throughout the project, especially later in the summer, there will be periodic single lane closures with traffic regulators. A 10-foot width restriction will be in place throughout the project, with an 11-foot width restriction in place at the culvert. This project is set to be finished on Sept. 16.

MDOT has a lone project beginning on Monday in Menominee County as well. 17.9 miles of U.S. 41, stretching from south of 56th Ave. in the city of Menominee to south of County Road 352 in the city of Stephenson, will be resurfaced. This $10.2 million project will include asphalt milling, two courses of asphalt resurfacing, guardrail replacement, joint repairs, pavement markings, and drainage improvements.

During the course of the project, those traveling can look forward to intermittent single lane closures with traffic regulators. There will be a 10-foot width restriction in place for the duration of the project. Work periods will run Monday through Saturday all day, with the entire project set to conclude on Oct. 14.

MDOT’s Ishpeming and Crystal Falls service centers will be managing these two projects.

Schoolcraft County will host two MDOT projects this summer, both of which are at Wisconsin Central Railroad crossings within the county. The first railroad crossing rebuilding project, a $330,300 investment by MDOT, is located on M-94 and will begin in May. The second will begin in July on M-77, MDOT’s investment in this rebuilding project totaling $613,652.

There are additional summer MDOT projects in neighboring counties as well. Those looking to travel through Marquette County can expect east/westbound U.S. 41 from Front St. to Front St. Lane to be closed for construction starting on Monday. This project has an estimated finish date of Oct. 22. Construction on north/southbound U.S. 41 from County Road AKE to U.S. 41 began on May 2, and one lane will remain closed until the expected Sept. 30 end date.

An MDOT project in downtown Houghton has already begun, leaving southbound U.S. 41 from Franklin St. to Pearl St. completely closed. Those traveling in the area should use Sharon Ave. as a detour route until the project wraps up around Sept. 16.

Along the Lake Superior shore in Alger County, in and around the city of Munising, there will be a lane shift due to MDOT construction on east/westbound M-28 form Brook St. to Saint Nicholas Ln. This lane shift is set to end on Aug. 31.
