ESCANABA — The Bay College Scholarship Golf Outing started 30 years ago, the first charity golf outing in Delta County.

It all started because many students cannot afford a college education. Scholarship awards provide a bridge of opportunity to the students who receive them while advancing education within the community.

Since 1991, the Bay College Scholarship Golf Outing has helped 337 students complete their career certificate, degree and or transfer program. Dave Pechawer has been a long-term participant in this event.

“I’ve golfed in this golf outing for all 30 years,” Pechawer said in a news release. “What I love about this event, is it’s all about the students. 100% of the proceeds support student success through scholarships.”

Foundation Vice President Kim Carne said in the release: “Bay College is so fortunate to be part of a community that is dedicated to enhancing and enriching lives through higher education. I cannot thank the golfers, sponsors and volunteers of the event enough for their continuing support. I especially want to thank the generous businesses and individuals who sponsored Swing for Scholarships at a Master level: Delta Appraisal Services, Edward Jones, First Bank Investment Management Group, Crawford Funeral Homes, Office Planning Group, Pearson Asbestos Abatement/OHA, PM Properties LLC, Schneider, Larche & Haapala CPAs, Stewart Manufacturing, CJ & Madelyn Schmidt, UP State Bank, and CMDA – Attorneys at Law.”

Founded in 1972, the Bay College Foundation connects businesses, organizations and individuals to the rewards of changing lives and advancing communities by investing in higher education.

Over the past 40 years, the Foundation has been raising funds for student scholarships, program development, community arts, athletics, and campus enhancements – improving the overall student experience and learning environment.
