State Police warn of phone scams

CALUMET — The Michigan State Police Calumet Post is cautioning residents about phone scams.

Officials are reminding the public not to provide banking or personal information over the phone to unknown callers posing as a relative in need of money or a government official seeking information.

“Numerous people have reported to the police that they have received calls from subjects claiming to be a relative (that) cannot talk clearly because of a crash or other circumstance and ask for money to be released from jail,” an MSP release states. “The post has also receive numerous complaints from citizens who advised they are receiving calls from subject claiming to be an agent of the Internal Revenue Service and request personal information because of possible fraudulent activity.”
