MARQUETTE — The Chocolay Township Board will consider authorizing the township clerk to pay over $250,000 to Gundlach Champion, Inc for the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community’s elevated water tank under a prior agreement to use 2 percent funds for the project during its regular meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at the Chocolay Township Hall.

Gundlach Champion submitted two pay requests, a portion of which will go toward the steel for the project, and a portion for fabrication costs of the $695,000 tank.

The township will have perpetual right to use the 75,000 gallon facility for water suppression provided the tank level does not drop below 40,000 gallons, according to an agreement approved by the township board in December.

The tower will primarily serve the expanding Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Casino and tribal housing in Chocolay Township.

If approved, the pay requests will be contingent on the receipt of the final $620,000 payment from KBIC to the township for the project.

In other business, the board will hear the Planning Commission’s annual report and consider the proposed rezoning of parcels on Kabawgam Road from Waterfront to Residential; the proposed rezoning of the Chocolay River Corridor from Residential to Waterfront; and the proposed rezoning of parcels on Kabawgam Road at M-28 East from Multi-Family Residential to Commercial; and the proposed extension of the township’s Mixed Use Overlay District.

The board will also consider bids for proposed 2019 paving.

According to an agenda supplement, the proposed project would include paving for all the roads in the Woodvale Subdivision and Ortman Road from Cherry Creek Road to the Sands Township Line..

The low bid for the project, $428,632, was received by Bacco Construction out of Iron Mountain. The township budget allocated $625,000 for the proposed work, according to the supplement.
