‘Missing man’ flyover salute, memorial service planned for pilot who died in 2020 in UP’s Hiawatha National Forest

MADISON, WIS. — F-16s from the 115th Fighter Wing’s 176th Fighter Squadron and F-15s from the Oregon Air National Guard’s 123rd Fighter Squadron will honor the memory of Maj. Durwood “Hawk” Jones during a memorial service and “missing man” flyover salute at 11:30 a.m. (Central time) today over Truax Field in Madison, Wisconsin.

During the flyover, two of the aircraft will carry U.S. flags on board in the cockpits in Jones’ memory.

Following the missing man flyover, the flags will be presented to his children in honor of his service and sacrifice.

The event will be broadcast live on the 118th Fighter Wing’s Facebook page. There also will be a moment of silence observed.

Jones died in an F-16 crash in the Hiawatha National Forest in the Upper Peninsula in 2020.
