Two people seriously injured in two-vehicle crash in Rapid River

RAPID RIVER — Two people were injured in a Tuesday morning accident in Rapid River, the Michigan State Police Gladstone Post reported.

Police said that at about 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, troopers responded to the area of U.S. 2 and U.S. 41 on a report a two-vehicle crash. Information received indicated there was airbag deployment and one vehicle had rolled over several times.

Troopers arrived on the scene and observed that one vehicle had rolled over several times and had come to rest on its wheels.

An investigation showed that a vehicle driven by a 72-year-old man from downstate Oscoda was headed south on U.S. 41 and had left the roadway just north of the Rapid River Mini Mart, striking a roadway market pole.

The vehicle came to rest and a local resident checked the driver’s status. The driver, police said, gave a “thumbs up” sign to indicate he was OK and then drove away, continuing south on U.S. 41. The vehicle then failed to stop at the stop sign at the U.S. 2 intersection. He entered the intersection and struck a westbound vehicle driven by a 60-year-old Rapid River man.

The collision caused the westbound vehicle to roll over several times. The southbound vehicle continued south across U.S. 2, leaving the roadway and striking several road signs before coming to a stop.

Both drivers suffered severe but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to OSF St. Francis Hospital & Medical Group in Escanaba by Rampart EMS. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash.

Names are not being released at this time due to the ongoing investigation. Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Masonville Township Fire and EMs, Rampart EMS and Delta County sheriff’s deputies.
