Men killed by slabs identified

STERLING HEIGHTS (AP) — Police have identified two workers who died when slabs of granite fell on them inside a Detroit-area business.

Sterling Heights police say 30-year-old Benjamin Allen Welch of Warren and 53-year-old James Jones of Shelby Township died in the accident Monday afternoon at the business called the Stone Warehouse.

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration said the two were using an overhead crane to move the slabs off of an A-frame rack, but as they did, slabs on the opposite side of the rack fell over, creating a domino effect that caused several slabs to fall onto them.

Sterling Heights Fire Chief Chris Martin tells The Macomb Daily the men died instantly. He says the slabs weigh about 1,000 pounds each.
