Life jacket loan station established

PORT AUSTIN, Mich. (AP) — It’s a sheriff’s version of a little free library. But in Huron County, the box holds life jackets, not books.

A life jacket station has been set up in Port Austin at the tip of Michigan’s Thumb. Boaters can borrow a jacket before they head into Lake Huron. Port Austin is popular among kayakers who paddle to the famous Turnip Rock.

Sheriff Kelly Hanson says he worked on the project with Port Austin village President Todd Murawski. The sheriff says having a life jacket on board can prevent a tragedy, although he prefers that people wear it.

Over the holiday weekend, Hanson says his deputies wrote at least three tickets to people who didn’t have life jackets.
