Custom chair brings comfort to 7-foot-8-inch Michigan man

MICHIGAN CENTER, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan man who is more than 7 feet tall has gotten a free, custom-made chair that fits his 500-pound frame.

Broc Brown, 21, of Michigan Center, was delivered a custom chair from Lippert Components Inc. on June 14 after a technician with the Indiana-based company came across Brown’s story online and decided to help.

“It’s pretty awesome. It feels kind of like I’m in a throne,” Brown told The Jackson Citizen Patriot .

Brown has Sotos Syndrome, or cerebral gigantism, which affects about one in every 15,000 people. He was previously listed as the world’s tallest teenager in the Guinness Book of World Records for being 7 feet, 8 inches tall.

The condition causes chronic back and knee pain, said Stacy Snyder, Brown’s aunt.

Lippert creates parts for recreation vehicles, buses and boats. The company designed, made and donated the chair. Bill Snodgrass is a research and development technician at the company. He came across Brown’s story online and decided to help.

“We saw a picture of him in a chair that just didn’t fit and said we need to make him a chair he can get in and out of,” Snodgrass said. “We had a great time making it and we’re really thankful he let us do this for him.”

The chair features a reinforced steel frame, which makes it sturdier than traditional furniture.

“We don’t have a couch or chair in this house that hasn’t been broken,” Snyder said. “This is fantastic. It’s so nice when people see a need and are willing to help. We are so grateful.”
