MARQUETTE — If the 23rd annual Upper Peninsula Recreation Show lives up to the 22nd version of the popular event, thousands of area residents will soon be meandering through Lakeshore Arena jotting down wish lists. “Over 20,000 people went through the doors last year,” said Judy Mattord, who organizes the event along with her husband, Bob. Over 100 exhibitors will be on hand starting Tuesday, with everything from jewelry to all-terrain vehicles. Spas, fishing tackle, boats — including handcrafted models made in Marquette — motorcycles and balloons will also be showcased. In addition to exhibits, entertainment will be provided by Jonathan Stars of Lansing.

MARQUETTE – Opening of navigation out of Marquette approached a step nearer last night when the lights on the breakwater and lighthouse were turned on for the first time since December and the radio beacon was put in operation. F.G Sommers, keeper of the Marquette Light and Radio beacon, announced yesterday that he would put the equipment in operation because several grain carriers had left Duluth for Sault Ste Marie and the lower lakes, opening navigation on Lake Superior. The lights and beacon will be in operation now until the close of navigation in December. Lighthouse keepers for Passage and Apostle Islands will be taken to their stations tomorrow, Mr. Sommers said. They will leave this morning from Duluth on the tender Marigold. It is probable, he said, the keepers from the Stanard, Huron, Granite and Manitou lights would be taken to their stations early next week.
