GULLIVER–What looked like the highest gas prices in the Upper Peninsula turned out to be a ruse to keep potential customers at bay. The state Department of Agriculture has received reports of price-gouging, with some stations allegedly selling gas for as high as $1.80 a gallon. But Jerry Kokesh, owner of Don’s Automotive in Gulliver, posted what may be record rates for gasoline at his station, with $1.989 for full service unleaded and $1.959 for regular. Even in these precarious times, it would seem motorists would drive on in search of lower prices. And apparently that’s what Kokesh had in mind. “I’m out of gas,” he told The Mining Journal Friday. “I haven’t had gas for two months.” He said his pumps were not operating and had no plans to sell gas in the immediate future.
