L’ANSE — Baraga and L’Anse schools will have $96,700 to spend on Native American language, tutoring, and counseling programs this year. The Office of Special Programs received a Title 7 Federal Bilingual three-year grant award, according to Director Lynn Ketola. The money will provide partial support for a high school tutor for both of the school districts, an Ojibwa language teacher aid and Ketola’s position. The grant will also support a new elementary counselor position.

MARQUETTE — A total of 86 of the 172 graduates of Graveraet High School in the Class of 1940 attended their 20th reunion here over the weekend. An estimated half of those present for the anniversary celebration were from out of town. The two-day reunion activity got underway with registration Saturday noon at Graveraet, and a special program in the afternoon in Kaufman Auditorium. William Chapman, general chairman of the reunion committee opened the afternoon’s festivities by presenting each class member there with a “diploma,” which listed events scheduled for the weekend and current addresses of all the 1940 graduates. The program also included readings of the Class Will by Ernestine Nelson Johnson and Ken Summerset and the Class Prophecy by Pat Gaspar Lindquist and Henry Dorie.
