ISHPEMING — Being named citizen of the year by the Ishpeming Chamber of Commerce is a crowning honor for Carmen Waters, who’s spent a better part of her life working to improve the community. “It means a lot,” said the 71-year-old professional volunteer. “I’m a native of the town and my life has been spent helping others.” She’ll be honored for spearheading establishment of the Ishpeming Senior Center, initializing fund-raising efforts for the Lifeline emergency assistance program and developing a monthly craft show in downtown Ishpeming, among other endeavors. The Key Club was named organization of the year for its community involvement, according to Diplomats President Suzanne Coron. “Everyone’s excited about the award,” said Key Club President Sarah Carlson. “It’s nice to recognize teen volunteers for the work they do.” You Guys Records was selected for “helping to put Ishpeming on the map,” said Chamber President Paul Argall. “The group’s records highlight places in our area, encouraging travelers to visit our community.” Known around the country as “Da Yoopers,” the band has been together since 1975. “We’re totally thrilled about the award,” said band member Lynn Coffey.
