MARQUETTE — Like connoisseurs of fine wine, the judges swished water around and around in goblets, sniffing and sampling to test clarity and bouquet. And when they were finished, the panel named Skandia Township’s the best looking, best smelling and best tasting water in the Upper Peninsula. “We knew our water was good, but I guess this confirms it,” said John Lahti, the township’s water systems operator. The official verification of Skandia’s water quality came during the 41st annual Upper Peninsula Water Works two-day meeting in Marquette. The judges, who didn’t know where the samples were from, were poured goblets of water from numbered jugs. Wes Larson, supervisor of Negaunee Township, whose water won state competition last year, took this years’ defeat in stride.

ISHPEMING — The Chicago & Northwestern railway company has awarded a contract for grading and laying one mile of track to the Greenwood mine, which will be opened this year by the Inland Steel company of Chicago. Part of the new track will be laid over the old Fitch mine grade and the work can be completed in about two weeks. J.J. Dwyer, of Escanaba, roadmaster for the Northwestern, who was here yesterday inspecting the work, said that rails and ties were being loaded and would arrive at the spur line by the end of the week. The branch track into the mine property will be owned by the Northwestern, but it will connect with the main line of the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic railway at Greenwood. Considerable development is expected at the Greenwood mine this summer and much of the surface work necessary for the starting of the shaft sinking program will be underway shortly.
