MARQUETTE — The Summer Choral Society, directed by Floyd Slotterback, will present a concert version of the Bizet opera “Carmen” later this summer. Rehearsals will begin in room B-101 of the Thomas Fine Arts Building May 29 and 30, and continue on Mondays and Wednesdays for three weeks. Everyone who loves to sing is invited to participate. NMU students may take Summer Choral Society for credit as MU 112. Participants will purchase their own music and pay dues at the first rehearsal. The choir will be an official part of the U.P. Summer Sports Festival. Singers will receive Official Volunteer badges admitting them to all festival activities. The choir will present the national anthem at the opening ceremonies June 22. The concert will take place June 23. “Carmen,” Bizet’s final work, tells the tragic story of a young cigarette factory worker, Carmen, who falls in love with two rivals, the soldier Don Jose, and the toreador Escamillo. Soloists for the concert will be NMU faculty member Rob Englehart, Gwinn schools teacher Wayne Hanmer, and soprano Barbara Pierce, a private voice teacher in Marquette.

MARQUETTE — Still damp, but not much worse for the experience, a fishing boat owned by Kaino Asplund, Marquette, has been returned to the surface in the lower harbor and again moored to the dock. The boat sank Friday when it listed and took on water. Yesterday the boat was towed to the coal dock and raised to the surface by use of a crane. Francis Thill, a commercial fisherman on E. Main Street, said the boat was pumped out by the Coast Guard and returned to the dock. The 40-foot boat had not been in operation for some time, while it was being repaired by Asplund. He is expected to complete the repairs on the boat and use it for commercial fishing. It was not known exactly what caused the boat to take on water, but it is believed that the boat may have been tied too short, and did not have enough slack to vary with the tides.
