MARQUETTE — An Upper Peninsula couple who were official observers of the elections conducted recently in Nicaragua will make a presentation on the country, Monday in Marquette. “Nicaragua: The Struggle Continues” will be the title of the presentation by Ahmeek residents Gary Weglarz, a social worker, and his wife, Katie Knight, a professional photographer and instructor at Suomi College in Hancock. The slide/talk will be at 7 p.m. in the Erie Room of the university center at Northern Michigan University. Included will be black and white and color photographs and discussion on election results, historical context, and future possibilities and what the U.S.’s role has been in shaping events in Nicaragua.

ISHPEMING — A complete radio news roundup from the Ishpeming area will be broadcast daily from Ishpeming, beginning Monday. WDMJ, The Mining Journal radio station, will carry a full report on Ishpeming happenings each noon hour from the Ishpeming Journal office. It will be heard at 12:30 p.m. six days a week. Howard James, an Ishpeming resident and Mining Journal reporter, will broadcast the daily reports. For the past several weeks, news from Ishpeming has been included as part of the Michigan news on WDMJ. James took over the Ishpeming Mining Journal post in January. He is a former Lansing radio-television newscaster. Prior to returning to the Upper Peninsula, he served as a correspondent at the state capitol for a group of radio-television stations, including WWJ-TV and WXYZ radio, Detroit, WJRT-TV, Flint, and WOOD and WOOD-TV, Grand Rapids. He also is a former employee of WDMJ-TV, where he served as a newscaster in 1956 before going to Lansing.
