NEGAUNEE — Cager Shawn Borlace took home the top individual award Tuesday night during the annual Negaunee High School Winter Sports Awards Program held in the school auditorium. A 6-1 senior guard, Borlace pocketed a certificate presented by Mining Journal Sports Editor Craig Remsburg – representing the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. Borlace also joined teammate Jon Stambaugh in receiving a Mid-Peninsula Conference award; Borlace for a Dream Team selection and Stambaugh for a Second Team nod. Members of the boys’ varsity, junior varsity and freshman basketball teams were saluted Tuesday night, as well as NHS gymnasts and cheerleaders. Among trophies presented to NHS principal Mike Mileski, was a first place award earned by the Miner cheerleaders at the annual Michigan Tech competition.

90 years ago

MARQUETTE — Mrs. J.E. Lautner, 1308 Presque Isle Ave., was hostess to the Delta Sigma Nu sorority at a tea held in her home from 4 to 5:45 p.m. Wednesday. A spring motif was carried out at the tea table with bowls of daffodils, hyacinths and roses and white cathedral candles. Miss Dorothy McAskill, president of the society, and Miss Leone Eymer, past president, presided at the tea table. Miss Margaret Nicholls played a piano solo during the afternoon and there was music by the sorority quartet composed of Miss Leone Eymer, Miss Lucille Martini, Miss Mildred Ulti and Miss Evelyn Bertrand. In addition to members and pledges, an alumna, Miss Clara June, Mrs. J.N. Lowe, and Miss Martha Schacke attended the tea.
