MARQUETTE –With dignity and grace the young violinist finishes his song, bows to his teacher, and then breaks into a broad smile. “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” never sounded so good. The Suzuki method of teaching violin is based on the idea that children can learn instrumental music beginning at a very young age. The Marquette Suzuki violin program meets at the First Presbyterian Church providing lessons for students from four to 18 years old. The method uses a combination of private and group lessons, both which involve parent participation. Group lessons are designed to help motivate students by allowing them to learn from their peers. Participants in the sessions are: Cheryl Sherony and her sons, Tom and Michael, of Marquette, Susie Hallesy and her mother, Faye, of Negaunee; Annie Dunstan and her mother, Margaret, of Ishpeming; Clara McMahon and her mother, Alice, of Marquette; Hassan Malouf and his mother, Diane, of Marquette; Maija and Markku Savolainen of Ishpeming and their mother Marilyn, who is an instructor; Kim and Jenny Slotterback of Marquette and their mother, Carla, the second instructor. Other students are Josiah Ittner of Eben, Rachel Warner of Chatham, and Aidan McKindles and Anna Kennedy, both from Marquette.

HARVEY — A resolution making Chocolay Township a registration school district was unanimously approved by the Chocolay Township Board of Education at its regular meeting this week. The school board took action on the issue by authority of the Michigan school law. Present at the meeting, as the first step in familiarizing himself with operations of the school district, was Philip I. Hiney, a Negaunee native who will be Chocolay Township’s new superintendent of schools. According to Carl O. Nelson, president of the school board, the board’s resolution means that all residents of the township, as well as those persons residing in Sections 1 and 12 of Sands Township, which are a part of the Chocolay school district, must be registered with the Chocolay Township clerk, Mrs. Donna Johnson, U.S. 41 at Beaver Grove. Registration deadline for the annual school election is June 3.
