Superiorland Yesterdays

MARQUETTE — Tracy Lokke of Gwinn paced a field of 82 runners with a time of 14 minutes, seven seconds to win the Easter Seal Three-mile Fun Run held Saturday near Hardees Restaurant on Presque Isle. Kevin Holmes, also of Marquette, placed second with a 14:37 clocking. Marquette’s Bridget Kaster and Jennifer McLean placed first and second, in the women’s division with 17:24 and 18:08 times, respectively. Runners donated $437 in entry fees for the benefit of children and disabilities. The run was sponsored by the Michigan Financial Corporation, which donated T-shirts, and Hardees, which provided refreshments. Prizes, donated by Johnson’s Sports, Minx Sports, Scott Clothiers, Holiday Travel, and Hardees were awarded following the run.

90 years ago

NEGAUNEE — Miss Martha Wiljanen has been chosen valedictorian and Miss Evelyn Erickson salutatorian of the graduating class of 1930 in Negaunee high school. Runners-up for honors were Anna Moberg, Phyllis Skues, Savino Besola, Sylvia Hemmila, Signe Jokinen, Laina Lukkarainen, William Rowse and Aurelia Hendrickson. The graduating class this year will number about 75 students, with 21, including the two selected for valedictory and salutatory honors, eligible to the Negaunee chapter of the National Honor Society. Granted a charter in 1923, the Negaunee high school now has a large membership in the National Honor society.
