MARQUETTE — Twenty-seven walkers raised $1,008 for the Easter Seal Telethon in a one-hour Walk-A-Thon at the Westwood Mall in Marquette Township. Walkers ranged in age from 2 months to 70 years, and walked from one to four miles, led by hosts, Don Ryan and Steve Asplund and U.P. Poster Child Bill Olson. Telethon co-host Jim Koski also participated and was master of ceremonies. Miss Superiorland, Rebecca Stevens, was one of the four-mile walkers. Enesco Corp., makers of Precious Moments figurines, sponsors walk-a-thons nationally for Easter Seals. Local sponsors were the Westwood Mall and Precious Moments dealer, Morrison’s Drug Store, Chairwomen Susan Dix and Ellen Prusok were delighted with the results, despite a heavy snowfall, and said they hope to do the event again next year. Top money-raiser was Amos Foster of Ishpeming, who raised $159.

MARQUETTE — Marquette plans to inaugurate an improved dog control program in two months and will seek to have the dog license fees increased to help pay for the program. “The dog license fees today are the same as they were in 1908,” City Manager George T. Meholick Jr. pointed out. He disclosed that the dog ordinance being prepared will place the responsibility for any damage on the dog owner himself. Meholick said there are around 1,200 dogs in the city. The city commission said the dog license fees should be around $5 for male and unsexed animals; and $8 or $10 for females. The current fees are $1 and $4, respectively.
