ISHPEMING–The director of Catholic Relief Services for the Diocese of Marquette closed out the 1989 record of monies shared with the Global Mission of the Catholic Church. Monies shared by Upper Michigan Catholics with the relief services was $105,995.99. Monsignor David Spelgatti of Ishpeming said major fund raisers for the programs are the Lent-long Operation Rice Bowl and the Mid-Lent Appeal for seed monies to sustain relief services programs in more than 70 countries. When Lent begins Feb. 28, Catholics will be invited to participate in Operation Rice Bowl. One day a week they will save the cost of the family meal and donate the total CRS to make food available to the hungry overseas. On March 24-25, during the middle of Lent, Catholics are invited to share generously with CRS so that seed monies will be available to finance projects including the Child Survival program, a Seed Bank that assists nations with long-term recovery efforts, Emergency Famine Relief, and Resettlement programs for people disabled by revolution and civil strife.
