ISHPEMING — The cause of Ishpeming’s $35,000 fire early Saturday morning has not been determined, according to Fire Chief William Alderton. The blaze apparently broke out during the night on the second or third floor of Valente’s Furniture Store, near the corner of Cleveland and Third streets. Frank Valente, owner of the store, said he had locked up Friday night after 9 and everything appeared to be in proper order at that time. He also had checked a stoker-type furnace located on a lower level than the rest of the store before leaving the building. The blaze was discovered at 6:15 Saturday morning by two Ishpeming policemen and Nick Joseph, manager of the IGA Store across the street. Heavy smoke was rolling out of the building when firemen arrived at the scene minutes later. Unable to find access except through a window because of a tin siding on the building, firemen were unable to stop the blaze from eating through the second and third floors of the old frame structure with its dry timbers and floors. Fire fighters saved a two-story frame house which stands at the southeast corner of the furniture store. The Burly Smith family, who moved into the house just days ago from St. Ignace, were evacuated and residents in the entire block were awakened by police when they appeared endangered. “I feel our men did a good job by keeping the other buildings from going,” Chief Alderton said. Firemen also prevented the Ishpeming Theater building from catching fire after tar and wood near the roof began flaming from the heat and sparks from the Valente building blaze.
