ESCANABA–Wisconsin may ban trout fishing this spring in some streams where low water levels are threatening the fish, but Michigan is unlikely to do so, Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials say. “There is no intent to close streams in Michigan now, and I wonder if that’s the way to go anyway,” said David Borgeson, assistant to the chief of fisheries for the Michigan DNR. Several years of drought or near-drought conditions have depleted ground water tables throughout the Midwest. The problem is especially severe in northeastern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula, where trout populations have been declining in some of the more shallow streams. Some DNR officials said they feared a fishing ban in Wisconsin could drive anglers across the border, creating further pressure on Michigan trout. Borgeson dismissed those concerns, saying, “You can have all kinds of fears, but they won’t leave (Wisconsin) to fish where the fishing is poor.”

MARQUETTE–Valiant is available in six models, in four-door sedan and station wagon body styles at Northland Motors. Don Crane, manager of Northland Motors, said Valiant is a family-size economy car giving excellent fuel economy, high performance, and full-car roominess with luxurious ride. “It’s got style, it’s got verve–it performs, it’s rugged, it handles nicely,” said Crane. “Valiant was created as an original automobile from the wheels up,” he said. Some of Valiant’s chief features, according to Crane, include: its low initial price and maintenance; at 184.0 inches it is shorter in size than standard American cars; with an over-all width of 70.4 inches and an over-all height of 54.0 inches, it is comfortable for a family of six; features full unit construction and is corrosion protected by a seven-dip immersion process; capable highway performer with brisk acceleration; 24.9 cubic foot trunk compartment designed to provide luggage capacity for a family weekend trip and still provide a concealed spare tire in a sunken tire well; completely new inclined six-cylinder engine that delivers 101 horsepower at 4,400 rpm.
