NEGAUNEE –As a new elementary school program begins in Negaunee, the public is invited to watch balloon launches Friday to signal its beginning. Two launches will take place: the first at Lakeview School at 12:50 p.m. and the second at Pineview School in Palmer at 2:45 p.m. The program being launched is “Skills for Growing,” from Quest International. It is designed to help children, kindergarten through grade five, develop positive social skills, character, and citizenship. Representatives of groups involved with installing the Quest program will attend Friday’s launches. They will include John Meier of the Negaunee Lions Club; Judy Watson Olson of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation; David Miller of Quest International; Ruth Poutanen from the Lakeview School Home-School Organization; Mark Spangler or Jeff Allen of Pamida Store, Ishpeming; and Fae Collins, a member of the Negaunee Board of Education.

SOO JUNCTION — Carpenters are busy putting the Soo Junction school house into condition for use. There has been a school there only one year, because it has been possible to send the few students to Newberry. But now there are more than a dozen children of school age living there and it is not feasible to have them transported to Newberry during the winter. Superintendent Bystrom has the matter in charge. It is expected that the building will be ready Jan. 6.
