NATIONAL MINE — National Mine School Principal Maxine Honkala received an American Association for State and Local History Award from Thomas Friggens, regional historian for the Michigan Bureau of History. The national commendation was made to the school for its publication “Red Dust 1988” and its multi-image slide program “Frontier Forge: A Catalyst for Industrialization.” Besides Honkala and Friggens, teachers Sharon Richards and Bobbi Ameen were present, along with 10th grade students, Dawn Thibeault, David Joseph, Craig Knutson, Elizabeth Hamm, and Chad Johnson.

60 years ago

NEGAUNEE — Camp Fire Girls, one of Negaunee’s largest youth organizations, has added another unit with formation of the Tanda Group. Officers selected included Lois LaForest, president; Gail Pizziola, vice president; Beth Hakala, treasurer; and Barbara Kangas, secretary. Adult leaders of the unit are Miss Joyce Koski and Mrs. Hakala. “Tanda” the name selected by the club, is an Indian term meaning love, honor and respect.
