NEGAUNEE — Coach Bruce Farrell’s Negaunee High School boys’ tennis team got its season off to a good start with a 6-1 victory over the visiting Westwood Patriots here Tuesday afternoon. Westwood’s only win came at No. 1 singles where Craig Hyett defeated Dan Soine, 6-2, 6-4. Negaunee got victories from newcomer Felipe Faro and veterans Ray Herman and Dan Skewis in the singles competition, and swept the doubles. “We’re starting off strong,” Farrell said. “For most of the kids, the day before (Monday), when it was 26 degrees, was their first time out for the year and they hit the ball around for a few minutes. I have to be satisfied with all of them,” he added. “They played well considering the conditions this year.”

MARQUETTE — Marquette’s second rabies clinic, held in the Palestra Saturday, has been termed “disappointing” by Drs. D.V. Engstrom and R.S. Haight, area veterinarians who conducted the clinic. In four hours Saturday, only 189 dogs were given rabies immunization shots. “We still haven’t done an effective job,” said Dr. Haight. Roughly 500 dogs have been given vaccinations in the county, he added, out of a rough estimate of a 5,000 dog population. “We are going to have to have another clinic,” said Dr. Haight, “but we will have to have a more effective method of persuading people to take advantage of the immunizations against rabies.”
