GWINN — The following top spellers in the recent district spelling bee hosted by the Gwinn schools are on their way to regional competition at Westwood High School April 19: Fifth grade – Andy Johnson, Sawyer Elementary, first place; Jason Lane, McDonald Elementary, second place. Sixth grade – Cindy Jackson, Gilbert Elementary, first; Denise DeGroot, Wells Township School, second. Seventh grade – Tammy Durant, Gwinn Middle School, first; Jason Collister, Gwinn Middle School, second. Eighth grade – Robin Zeleznik, Gwinn Middle School, first; Tony D’Ambrosio, Gwinn Middle School, second.

SKANDIA — John E. Johnson will fill Skandia Township Supervisor John Ollila’s chair at the next meeting of the Marquette County Board. He was elected this week to succeed Ollila, defeating Venner Valli, slip candidate. Ollila is retiring after serving in that post for 16 years. Another veteran Skandia Township official who is leaving public life is Lowell M. Johnson, clerk for the last 23 years. He will be succeeded by Kenneth Johnson, who was elected without opposition.
