ISHPEMING–When Pete Carlson of rural Ishpeming and his family lost their home to fire last December, it didn’t take long to realize how many friends they have. Donations began arriving the night of the fire and are still coming in. Dozens of sources have raised thousands of dollars to help Pete and Cathy rebuild their lives and their home. A special fund at the Miners’ Bank in Ishpeming contains nearly $4,000, and Lutheran Brotherhood 807 has raised about $2,000 in a gift-matching program. The Greenwood Bible Fellowship started the fund-raising efforts, which have included contributions from the Pigs ‘N’ Heat, Trinity Lutheran Church, St. John Catholic Church, the Ishpeming singing group Allegro, Red Cross and Legion of Iron Workers Post 114, which sponsored a benefit dance.

MARQUETTE–Construction of a new iron ore dock for the Duluth, South Shore, and Atlantic railway probably will be started before the end of the coming shipping season. Preliminary harbor and land surveys for the location and approach of the dock were undertaken some time ago and have been completed, and it is known that plans and specifications for the dock structure, itself, are practically completed. The dock will be a concrete and steel structure considerably larger than the wooden dock now used by the South Shore. It will be longer and at least 10 feet higher than the present dock. In designing it, the engineers have endeavored to look ahead many years and provide a structure large enough to accommodate larger vessels than the biggest ones now engaged in the iron ore traffic. Nothing official has been announced relative to the probable outlay for the proposed dock, but it is thought that it will cost nearly $2,000,000.
