SAULT STE. MARIE — Shipping on the St. Marys River remained halted a second day while crew members tried to figure out how to free a freighter stuck in the narrow channel, U.S. coast Guard officials said. The 1,000-foot Mesabi Miner took too wide a turn in the river on the U.S.-Canadian border Monday night and ran aground about 15 miles southeast of the locks at Sault Ste. Marie, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The ship punctured a forward tank and took on water, but the Coast Guard said the boat, owned by Interlakes Steamship Co., wasn’t in danger of sinking. Eleven ships were held up in the river by today, said Coast Guard Lt. John Andrzejewski. The stuck ship is expected to continue to block the river traffic out of and into Lake Superior while a diver inspects the hull damage, he said. The freighter crew will try to shift the ship’s load to free it, Andrzejewski said. The freighter was carrying iron ore from Minnesota to Lorain, Ohio.

AU TRAIN — Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Rankin of Marquette blinked in surprise when they drove past the picnic grounds on M-28 here yesterday. Standing on the ground alongside the highway was a beautiful male ring-necked pheasant, a bird “that shouldn’t have been there.” The only counties in the Upper Peninsula known to contain this game bird are Menominee and Delta. The pheasant may have migrated north from there or it may have been released in the area by a private party.
