QUINNESEC–A citizen’s petition protesting a new landfill wouldn’t sway Dickinson County commissioners considering the project, commission Chairman Garland Mainville says. Mainville told Breitung Township residents Monday that the county commission will approve or reject the Quinnesec landfill based on preliminary engineering tests.

“A petition would not help you at this time,” Mainville told residents who asked if a signature drive could change the county’s decision. The Breitung Township Board contends the landfill will restrict township growth and threaten development of nearby Lake Fumee as a state park. Township officials also say the landfill might contaminate the Quinnesec water system.

ISHPEMING–The first major fundraising campaign by the newly organized Explorer Post 343 will be a film, “Everything but the Truth,” to be presented at the Ishpeming High School auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The Explorer Post, the first such unit to be chartered in Ishpeming, was organized in December. The group is sponsored by the Presbyterian Men’s Group. The charter was presented to Paul Bluekamp, Ishpeming, the institutional representative, by the district Scout commissioner, the Rev. Ben Helmer, Negaunee. Organized under the new Explorer program initiated late in 1958, Post 343 is a member of the Pere Marquette District of the Hiawathaland Council. The Post committee is composed of Jack Bowen, chairman; Ned Johnson, Ken Winslow, T.W. Tippit, and Ray Varda. Ten Engel and Jack Sleeman are advisors. As a means of obtaining funds for purchasing equipment, Post 343 and a group of former members of the unit who are now in the process of organizing a Sea Scout are presenting the film.
