MARQUETTE–Vine Deloria Jr., well-known American Indian author and lecturer, plans to visit Northern Michigan University March 13-17. Deloria will be on campus as a Martin Luther King-Cesar Chavez-Rosa Parks visiting professor sponsored by the history department. A professor of political science and director of the American Indian studies program at the University of Arizona, Deloria has written more than a dozen books on contemporary Indian issues and history. Included in his on-campus activities will be a public lecture at 7:30 p.m March 14 in the Brule Room of the Don H. Bottum University Center. Deloria will give a historical perspective of major Indian treaties, comparing the original era of paternalism from 1911-1970 with the recent trend to renegotiate old treaties.

MARQUETTE–Marquette residents were cautioned this morning to brace themselves for colder weather, as mercury is expected to dip to near zero tonight. Low temperature tonight will be about 5 degrees along the lake and zero inland. The high reading today was expected to be from 22 to 28 degrees in the Marquette area. Temperatures this month have averaged 10.7 degrees above mean readings for the period. For the period beginning tonight and ending Monday morning, calls for low temperatures to average near or slightly below the normal maximum of 34 along the lake and 27 inland, and the minimum of 17 along the lake and 8 inland. A slight warming trend, created by a low pressure area moving in from Canada, will occur Friday and Saturday, with temperatures turning colder again Sunday, according to meteorologist Arthur J. LaCombe. Precipitation will average one-tenth to five-tenths of an inch during this period, in the form of light snow late tonight and tomorrow and again on Saturday and Sunday.
