MARQUETTE–A memorial fund has been established to honor the two Northern Michigan University freshmen who drowned Oct. 4 near the Upper Harbor breakwater. Kurt A Buffington of Petoskey and Shane C. Kulchyski of Hartland were walking on the breakwater during a storm when Kulchyski was swept off by a large wave. Witnesses said Buffington jumped into the lake in an attempt to save Kulchyski, and both drowned. Students in the Sixth Dominion House of Gant Hall at NMU are spearheading the effort, in cooperation with the two students’ families, to have a memorial erected. Both Buffington and Kulchyski were residents of the house in Gant. The memorial would consist of a bronze plaque mounted on a granite boulder near the breakwater, said Kevin Weed, Sixth Dominion House spokesman. Donations can be made to the Buffington-Kulchyski Memorial, C/O the NMU Development Fund, Northern Michigan University, Marquette, Mich. 49855.

MANISTIQUE–Manistique’s city council has been presented with a recommendation by the Women’s club that cats in the city be licensed similar to dogs. It is pointed out that cats are a menace to song birds and that many without homes are obliged to seek their own living. Cats are dropped along the highways where they prey upon birds and young animals. We don’t know what the city fathers are going to do with the request but as long as recommendations are in line we want to add one ourselves: Before taking up the question of cats would it not be a good idea to get our dog problem solved first? There are any number of dogs about town that make a continual practice of chasing automobiles. Most drivers love dogs and try to avoid hitting them, sometimes endangering themselves in doing so. These dogs that constantly chase cars should either be tied up by their owners or else taken over by the police department. Any dog owner who knowingly lets his dog chase automobiles with the chance of being killed has little love for his dog. As we said before, the council might also take some action in this manner.
