MARQUETTE — March 12, and April 22 are dates Girl Scouts and their adult leaders here, and elsewhere, are getting ready to celebrate. Juliette Gordon Low organized the first Girl Scout Troop in Savannah, Ga. — with 18 members — on March 12, 1912. Today, Girl Scouting is the largest voluntary organization for girls in the world. It is open to all girls ages 5 through 17 (or in kindergarten through grade 12) who subscribe to its ideals as stated in the Girl Scout promise and law. Its program offers girls a broad range of activities which address both their current interests and their future roles as women. Through activities that stimulate self-discovery, they are introduced to the worlds of science, the arts, the out-of-doors, and people. April 22, meanwhile, is Girl Scout Leader’s Day. Local Girl Scouts take great pride in recognizing the accomplishments of local leaders, both women and men. Membership in the Peninsula Waters Girl Scout Council, Inc., consists of 3,021 girl and 976 adult members throughout the Upper Peninsula and one-half of Iron County, Wis.
