ISHPEMING — Leslie Rock, with “Rex,” his year-old hound, won first place with ease from a field of 20 shepherds, collies and police dogs in the dog derby held yesterday morning on Main street before a large crowd. Rock, nine years old, has a canine that minds his own business when he is racing and the little animal, smallest dog on the course, was first in every heat. Second money went to Angelo Portale, of Negaunee, and the winners were Sulo Talbacka, Ovid Bargeron, Tuffy Grasso, Theodore Mattson and David Champion. The horse race proved to be one of the most successful events of the kind ever held here and the horses showed considerable speed. Henry Champion’s horse won first money, but was closely trailed in all heats by Verl Wills, of Palmer, who rode his “Diamond Lil,” a former pacer from Dr. William Bell’s stables. “Diamond Lil,” 16 years old, was ridden here from Palmer by her jockey and she put up a great performance considering her age and the eight-mile trip necessary to get here. Russell Watters won third in the race. The dog owners, who were masked and had their racing carts decorated, paraded before the derby and the prizes for that even were won by David Champion, Theodore Mattson and Albert Champion.
