Negaunee City Band features a southern Christmas in July
NEGAUNEE — Negaunee City Band features a southern Christmas in July. Since last week’s Negaunee City Band Christmas in July concert was rained out, this week the band will feature several Christmas numbers at its free concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center at the east end of Iron Street.
Those planning to attend are encouraged to bring donations of canned and boxed food to be distributed
to local food pantries.
The Christmas numbers on the program include Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” “Dashing Through the Snow,” (based on “Jingle Bells”) and “Ukrainian Bell Carol.”
Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Trombone Concerto,” performed by Ishpeming Public Schools band director Ben Zindler, will be a highlight of the program.
A number of selections refer to a warmer Southern theme, including “Cuban Holiday” and “Espana Cani,” one of the most famous of the great paso dobles.
Composer W. C. Handy is represented with “Beale Street Blues,” which captures the feel of the legendary Beale Street in Memphis with both swing and Dixieland elements. Handy is also the composer of the jazzy “St. Louis Blues March,” an audience favorite.
The concert will conclude with another audience favorite, “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”
