‘Baby Garnet’ mother extradited

By Journal Staff

ST. IGNACE — The mother of “Baby Garnet” has been extradited back to Michigan by the Michigan State Police 7th District Fugitive Team and lodged in the Mackinac County Jail on a warrant of homicide-open murder.

The Mackinac County Sheriff’s Office on Monday named Nancy Ann Gerwatowski (nee Niskala), 58, as the defendant.

The Mackinac County 92nd District Court was notified of her arrest and returned back to Michigan. Gerwatowski was arraigned by video on Saturday morning on a one-county charge of homicide-open murder, a felony.

The court denied bond for the defendant and scheduled her next court appearance for 9:30 a.m. Aug. 9 in district court.

Mackinac County Sheriff Edward M. Wilk thanked law enforcement personnel and Identifinders International, LLC for their “hard work and diligence” to help solve the case.

The Wyoming woman was arrested in July to face arraignment in the death 25 years ago of a baby found discarded in the waste pit of a Garnet Lake campground outhouse in Hudson Township. The baby was dubbed “Baby Garnet.”

No further information is being released at this time.
