MARQUETTE — A flu outbreak has banned visitors to hospitals and nursing homes in the western Upper Peninsula, but does not yet concern health officials in the rest of the U.P. Nursing home residents are typically given influenza vaccinations each year, but the facilities decided to take extra precautions and restrict visitors. This year’s virus is Type A influenza. But the distinction means nothing to the person who has the flu. The most common symptoms are fever, cough and achiness. A vaccine is still being offered, but it’s not as effective this late in the season. The vaccine takes several weeks to protect the body from the virus. Most people get the shot in November or December. The central and eastern U.P. haven’t been hit as hard by the flu this year. Health officials attribute that to the number of people who got flu shots. Marquette County, however, is expecting to see more cases as winter drags on.

MARQUETTE — Founded by a group of volunteer Marquette area men and dedicated to “assist their needy neighbors,” the Help Organization will begin functioning in Marquette starting Monday. The Help Organization will operate through solicitation and exchange of usable household items. The organization’s headquarters will be located at 2234 Presque Isle Ave., where there will be, for sale and for free distribution, surplus items of furniture, appliances and other articles for home and family maintenance. While there is an element of marketing and selling in this operation, there are no profits, the Help Organization officers stated. All income received is used to maintain the work and to purchase articles or services of other kinds, such as food, medicine and counseling, for those in dire need, they added. The Help Organization staff will arrange to pick up the contributions and see to it that they are put in condition and made available to those in need.
