MARQUETTE — Whether it’s a basketball tournament in Florida or the start of the GLIAC Conference season in Marquette, Northern Michigan University’s Deanna Sutton seems to adapt to playing just about anywhere. Sutton, who was the most valuable player in the Florida Southern Tournament two weeks ago, scored 30 points and hauled down 19 rebounds in just 26 minutes of action to help Coach Mike Geary’s Lady Wildcats to a 101-65 league thrashing of Hillsdale College Thursday night at Hedgcock Fieldhouse. Leading 51-35 at halftime, the Lady Wildcat fastbreak – led by point guard Nichole Leibold – got cranking early in the second half. Leibold, second in the GLIAC with 8.7 assists per game, dished out seven of her 11 game assists in the first seven minutes of the half. Northern, 8-1 overall and 1-0 in league play, saw Hillsdale (3-6, 0-2) score the first five points of the contest before NMU got things in gear. The Lady Wildcats went on a 16-2 run over the next six minutes. Hillsdale Coach Phyllis Cupp said, “I feel bad that we didn’t give Northern a better game. You can’t take anything away from Northern because they always have a good team.”

MARQUETTE — Marquette’s fire department was summoned three times yesterday, twice to extinguish blazes and the third time on a needless call. At 11:37 yesterday morning firemen put out a chimney blaze at a residence using the booster hose off the service, or ladder, truck to extinguish the flames. Firemen returned to the station at 12:04 p.m. Another chimney blaze was extinguished by city firemen, also by use of the booster hose off the service truck. Firemen returned to the station from this call at 8:31 p.m. In most chimney blazes, damage is negligible, firemen said. At 11:35 p.m. firemen were summoned to a home on Pine St., but there was no fire. A neighbor saw the reflection of a fire in a fireplace in the window of a home across the street and thought the house was ablaze. Firemen returned to the station at 11:47 p.m.
