Superiorland Yesterdays

SAWYER AIR FORCE BASE — Todd Sneesby turned in the best overall effort in the inaugural Switchback Mountain Bike Race staged here this past weekend. Sneesby covered the course in a time of 14 minutes, 54.50 seconds to take first place in the 30-39 age group. Phillip Brown took second in the division with a time of 15:31.50 John Kolstad won the 18-29 age group in 17:43.50. The race was sponsored by Sawyer Air Force Base. An inaugural biathlon — open to the public — will be held Friday. Registration forms can be obtained at area sports shops and at the Olympic Sports Training Center at Northern Michigan University.

MUNISING — Paintings by Mrs. Mary Ann Clement, Shingleton, are on display at the Munising News office during October. Included in the displays are some done in water colors and oils covering seascapes, still life and portraits, along with a self-portrait in watercolor. Mrs. Clement has been interested in art most of her life and has studied at the Chicago Art Institute, Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and the Corcoran Art Institute of Washington, D.C.

In 1953, she exhibited four of her paintings at the Huron County Fair at Bad Axe, receiving a blue ribbon for each. She also has some cartoon work to her credit. She is presently teaching fundamentals of watercolor painting to a group of youngsters from Shingleton in her home every Saturday morning.
