NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee Historical Society’s annual meeting Tuesday will feature a talk on gold mining in the Upper Peninsula. Dan Fountain, an electronic technician for Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co and a former member of the historical society, will talk about his upcoming book, “Michigan Gold: Mining in the Upper Peninsula.” Fountain will show slides of gold mining operations, including pictures of the explorers who found the mines and the people who worked them. His slides include views of the Ropes Hold Mine operations from 1880 to the 1980s. The 1992 edition of the Negaunee Historical calendars will also be available for purchase. The meeting is open to the public and will begin at 7 p.m. at the Negaunee High School Auditorium.

BIG BAY — The proposed sale of the Big Bay Point Light Station, Big Bay, was announced by John W. Chapman Jr., regional commissioner, General Services Administration, Chicago. Efforts by the Bay Cliff Health Camp at Big Bay to obtain the property for expansion of the camp were unsuccessful. Included in the property to be sold by the GSA are 33,063 acres of land improved with seven structures. The property is located approximately 38 miles north of Marquette and 3.5 miles east of Big Bay.
