GWINN — Tough defense can be a great equalizer. Just ask Gwinn High School Girls’ basketball Coach Mike Forgette.

His Model Towners forced Gladstone into a miserable 11-for-63 shooting night, knocking the Braves from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 43-34 non-conference triumph.

“We didn’t press full-court,” Forgette said. “They were small and had quick guards. We played a 1-3-1 matchup zone throughout most of the game.”

The Model Towners took leads of 7-6 after one quarter and 19-16 at intermission. The turning point was when the coach put in Michelle Hamilton.

She only had one basket, put she played three excellent quarters. Gwinn, 3-1 overall, was paced by Tammy Seppanen’s 14 points and 14 rebounds. Missy Van Damme added 13 points.

Gwinn won the jayvee contest 71-41.

ISHPEMING — Arthur Nyquist and the Misses Helen Salson and Mabel Racine, veteran employees in the Gossard factory here, are leaving tonight on their trip to Melbourne, Australia, where they will spend the next six months as instructors in a new factory which Gossard will open there. The Ishpeming employees will meet a group of 10 others, recruited from other factories of the company in Chicago, and will proceed to San Francisco, from where they will sail Sept. 24 for Australia. The trip will require almost a month and the Gossard party expects to reach Melbourne about Oct. 21. Enroute, they will visit several places of interest, including New Zealand and the Hawaiian Islands. Last evening, male employees of the Gossard factory entertained Mr. Nyquist at a farewell party in the Y.M.C.A. camp. Several farewell functions have been held during the past few weeks for the Misses Racine and Salson. They will be employed in the Australia factory as instructors on power sewing machines, and Mr. Nyquist will insruct Australian young men in cutting.
