ISHPEMING — Jared Koski descended upon the practice field, helmet tucked in one hand. The senior split end/defensive back for the Westwood Patriots is returning from a much-deserved, five-minute water break. This is summer football practice, varsity prep style. “We know we need the repetitions,” said Brian Gray, senior safety/defensive end. Dressed in full pads under an unforgiving sun, drills can become mundane. Brad Richards, senior tackle/defensive end, said practices can be draining, but he has learned to cope. “There’s a lot of drill work with our offense against the defense,” said Chris Perry, senior tackle/defensive tackle. On the field, Coach Lyle Zablocki leads the running backs and quarterbacks through a series of offensive drills. He says the unique camaraderie with his players on the gridiron keeps him smiling, even when temperatures hover around 90 degrees. To a player, they’ll tell you what drives them during practices is the thought of playing football.
