Negaunee City Band details tunes

NEGAUNEE — Director Brandon Nelson has announced the program for this week’s Negaunee City Band concert, to be held on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center at the east end of Iron Street.

The program features marches by all three of America’s “March Kings.” Henry Fillmore will be represented with the spirited, vigorous “Crosley March,” while the Karl King march is “The Gateway City,” dedicated to the Elks Lodge in Livingston, Montana, the gateway to Yellowstone National Park. “Corcoran Cadets” by John Philip Sousa, the most famous of march composers, was written to honor a drill team of young men based in Washington, D.C.

The opening number is “Sine Nomine” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, which lovers of hymns may recognize as “For All the Saints.” Following that is “Arikara,” honoring a tribe of Native Americans based in North Dakota.

“In the Forest of the King” has three contrasting movements based on traditional French folksongs, while “Australian Up-Country Tune” is a melodic gem typical of composer Percy Grainger.

Several other numbers on the program are somewhat more contemporary. “Salute to Ol’ Blue Eyes” is a medley of notable hits of Frank Sinatra, including “I’ve Got You under My Skin,” “Stranger in the Night,” “That’s Life,” and “The Lady Is a Tramp.” A second medley is “The Best of Journey,” with songs popular in the early 1980s: “Don’t Stop Believin,'” “Separate Ways,” “Open Arms,” and “Any Way You Want It.”

The concert will conclude with the traditional “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”
