MARQUETTE — Marquette’s forensic team members recently attended the 24th Grand Hotel Forensics tournament on Mackinac Island. The tournament hosted by the Michigan Speech Coaches Association is held each year in conjunction with the coaches’ conference. Some 680 students competed this year in debate and forensics. Students attending the tournament must use new selections that they may use for the 1991-92 forensics season. This year, Marquette’s Joanna Ellingson was very successful in the dramatic interpretation category, making it all the way to the finals from a field of 48 entries. She finished with a second place speaker’s trophy.

MARQUETTE — “Sympathy picketers” continued a line in front of the Soo Hardware Co. store at 1100 S. Front St. today, although no Marquette employees are involved in the dispute. Roy Fletcher, vice president and general manager of the company, said the picketers here are expressing sympathy with four strikers at the Sault Ste. Marie main office of the company. The strikers are four of 12 employees at the warehouse in the Soo. He added that business is being conducted normally here and at the Sault Ste. Marie office. The employees are protesting the failure of AFL-company negotiations in agreeing on a contract and work agreement. Negotiations began last August, although Fletcher said there has been no meeting in several months, and that the company was not advised of the plans to strike. He stated that a wage increase offer had been rejected by union officials, but that it had been put into effect for the Sault Ste. Marie employees anyway.
