MARQUETTE — Every time Tim Maskus and his friends go the extra mile this summer, the Big Bay Health Camp winds up in the winner’s circle. Maskus and other members of the local chapter of the Sports Car Club of America are starting a Miles for Charity rally racing team to benefit the camp, which has been staggered by state budget cuts. “We said, ‘Let’s do something for charity.’ We wanted to something local that people would recognize, so we’re going to ask for donations for every mile we race this summer,” Maskus said. “A number of our members have been involved in Bay Cliff and see how much it’s done for people. So we thought it was a good idea.” “This may help us offset the loss in state funding. We lost $89,000 this year and we’re really struggling,” said Tim Bennett, Bay Cliff’s executive director. “We’re having to cut in areas we shouldn’t, so this can help us through these tough times.” The team has 12 members at present and was put together to run in events throughout the Midwest.

L’ANSE — The L’Anse Area Booster Club is conducting its second “Sinkola” project to obtain funds for playground equipment for the new village park on the lake front. “Sinkola” is an automotive relic, has been placed on the ice at the L’Anse boat basin. A $100 savings bond will be rewarded to the person whose guess is closest to the actual sinking time. Last year, the Sinkola contest netted the club $260 for playground equipment.
