MARQUETTE — High school students from the Marquette-Alger Intermediate School District will participate in a collective bargaining workshop Wednesday. About 50 students from the district will take part in the day-long “Mock Collective Bargaining” workshop. The programs was developed and offered by the ISD and the Upper Peninsula Labor-Management Council. The program calls for students to negotiate a labor contract for a fictitious U.P company and union. “The hands-on experience is not only an outstanding demonstration of their ability to formulate strategies and negotiate, it is the best means of educating each term about the tradition and importance of the collective bargaining process,” said Greg Sudderth of the council. The workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be held at Northern Michigan University.

Anguilm, Marquette, assistant regional supervisor of the field administration division for the Michigan Department of Conservation, said this makes a total of 60 fires here in the U.P. this year, with 423.4 acres of land burned as a result. By comparison, there were only 22 forest and field fires in the U.P. last year at this time with the acreage toll being 43.9. Two of the blazes last week were in the Baraga District (Baraga, Keweenaw, Houghton, Gogebic and Ontonagon counties), burning 27 acres of land.
